60How to Choose Resolution, FPS, and Bitrate for a YouTube Stream
Stream settings work together: resolution sets frame size, FPS sets frame rate, and bitrate sets the amount of data transmitted. An attractive combination will not produce a stable stream if the connection cannot carry it or the computer is overloaded. First find a manageable mode, then check image quality.
This guide covers a normal SDR YouTube stream using H.264. The official table gives different values for AV1 and H.265; do not mix them with H.264 figures or automatically apply them to another platform.
Match the mode to your connection
Measure upload speed under the conditions you will stream in. According to YouTube’s official table, checked on October 7, 2026, the recommended H.264 video bitrates are:
- 720p, 30 FPS—8 Mbps.
- 1080p, 30 FPS—14 Mbps.
- 1080p, 60 FPS—17 Mbps.
These recommendations are for a specific codec, not a quality guarantee or a universal service limit. YouTube also specifies CBR and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds. Its help page lists a stereo audio bitrate of 128 Kbps.
For example, you measure about 10 Mbps upload speed. Of the three modes above, you could test 720p30 at 8 Mbps; the other two exceed that speed with video alone. Video should not use the entire available upload bandwidth: leave room for audio, overhead, and connection fluctuations. This example does not guarantee your connection can sustain the selected mode.
Set consistent parameters in OBS
Under Settings → Video, set output resolution and FPS. Output resolution is the size of the transmitted image; the base canvas is used to arrange sources.
Under Settings → Output, configure the stream’s chosen H.264 encoder, video bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval. Available fields depend on the encoder and output mode. Check units: 8 Mbps equals 8000 Kbps. Do not change canvas size merely to reduce output bandwidth; first write down the specific problem you are solving.
Test a typical segment
Prepare a short test stream with Unlisted visibility or another appropriate access restriction. Remember that a link can be forwarded. Reproduce your usual load: speech, music or gameplay, a quick camera turn, and a scene switch. Watch stream health and messages in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
Evaluate three areas: small interface text, movement, and the webcam image if you use one. Note a specific flaw: “The text is hard to read” or “Turning produces blocks.” A general “The picture looks bad” does not identify the next action.
Change one setting at a time and repeat the same segment. If the combination is unstable, test a less demanding mode. If the problem occurs only on the computer, separately check encoder load. Save working settings and test results so the next attempt starts from a known point.
