38YouTube stream latency: normal, low, or ultra-low
Latency is the time between an event in front of the camera and its display to viewers. Lower latency makes chat easier but gives the player less buffered video when the connection fluctuates.
Choose a mode for the task
Normal latency suits streams without constant conversation. Low latency suits moderate interaction. Ultra-low latency suits frequent chat. Low and ultra-low modes do not support 4K.
- Open YouTube Studio → Create → Go live.
- In Live Control Room, select Stream or Manage and open Stream Settings.
- Under Stream latency, select the mode before going live.
- Run a short test broadcast with an appropriate visibility setting chosen beforehand, and ask a helper to check your response to a message.
Consider viewer connectivity
One mode does not give everyone the same delay: connection and playback matter. Ultra-low latency may increase buffering pauses. If they interfere, compare a less aggressive mode.
Webcam and mobile streams do not offer a separate latency choice. Their settings are designed for interaction.
During testing
- Questions and answers do not require awkward waiting.
- Playback does not pause regularly.
- The mode supports your chosen video format.
Change one setting at a time. If the problem is connection interruptions, do not expect a latency choice to fix it: check transmission stability first.
