Stream disconnects or drops frames: diagnose connection problems

Stream disconnects or drops frames: diagnose connection problems

If your stream disconnects, first check which problem OBS actually reports. Frames lost during transmission, rendering overload, and encoder overload call for different checks. Lowering quality randomly may hide a symptom without explaining its cause.

Identify the type of frame loss

Open OBS statistics and watch the indicators during a short test. Network Dropped Frames indicate trouble connecting to the ingest server or transmission that cannot maintain the chosen bitrate reliably. Frames missed because of rendering or encoding concern video processing and need separate investigation.

Start with simple network checks

  1. If you use Wi-Fi, test the stream over a wired connection. Compare a similar scene and test duration.
  2. Pause background downloads, cloud synchronization, and large file transfers on your devices.
  3. If the problem repeats, check the cable and equipment, then try another available ingest server in your platform settings.

A high speed result in a short internet test does not prove the route to your streaming server is stable. Note whether problems appear only in the evening, only on one platform, or with a particular connection.

Change one setting at a time

To test, lower the video bitrate within your platform's requirements. If frame loss decreases, the chosen load may have been too high for the current connection. Leave headroom for speed changes and other devices instead of relying only on the best measurement.

Dynamic bitrate adjustment, if available in your OBS version, can reduce loss during network congestion at the cost of quality. It does not fix a faulty route. If testing a VPN or network optimizer, first make sure the test will not disrupt access you need. Do not disable computer protection as a permanent solution.

Gather useful details for a support request

Save the OBS log after reproducing the problem, the failure time, platform, and comparison results. For example: “On a wired connection, frame loss remains only on one ingest server; a lower bitrate reduces it.” This is more specific than “The internet is bad.”

Check the log for personal information before sharing it. If simple tests do not help, contact your internet provider with your observations. Do not buy a new router just because one stream disconnected.
