Chroma key in OBS: remove a green background with clean edges

Chroma Key makes a selected color transparent. It works better with evenly lit backgrounds and clothing that does not match the removed color. Start by preparing the shot rather than maximizing sliders.

Add the camera filter

Make sure you have selected the camera source in OBS. A filter on another source changes another picture.

  1. Open the camera’s Filters and add Chroma Key to the effects list.
  2. Choose the background color: green, blue, or custom.
  3. Gradually adjust Similarity until the background disappears without losing face or clothing details.
  4. Adjust Smoothness for edges and Key Color Spill Reduction for color fringes.

If parts of the image disappear

Excessive similarity can remove parts of the person. Reduce Similarity and check shadows and folds in the background. Fixing lighting can be easier than compensating with the filter.

Check a moving shot. A good result on a still face does not guarantee clean hands and hair.

Before streaming

  • Turn around, raise your hands, and inspect the edges.
  • Check light and dark scenes behind the camera image.
  • Record a short segment and watch it at normal size.

Save the setting after testing. Repeat the test when lighting or clothing changes: the background and reflections may change even if the camera stays in place.
