How to choose a game for a small Twitch channel

The most popular game is not always suitable for a small channel: viewers may struggle to find you among many streams. An empty category does not guarantee interest either. Consider both the audience and your stream’s content.

Compare suitable categories

Start with games in which you have something to demonstrate or explain. Category selection should not turn every broadcast into an obligation to play something you dislike.

  1. Browse Twitch categories at the time you plan to stream.
  2. Check the number of streams and how viewers are distributed: are they concentrated around one large creator?
  3. Define what makes your stream distinct: teaching, a challenge, a relaxed playthrough, or a particular game mode.
  4. Run several comparable streams with a clear topic and consistent timing, then compare your observations.

A category is not a growth promise

Category viewership changes with tournaments, updates, and time of day. One look at the directory is not enough. Consider whether you can play and talk at the same time.

High demand does not mean low competition. Separately consider why someone would choose your stream.

Check your chosen game

  • You can explain it to a newcomer.
  • You have a goal for the next stream, not just a game title.
  • Preparation and technical demands fit your capabilities.

Record why you chose the game and the results of several trials. If the category does not fit, change direction based on observations rather than treating one unsuccessful stream as a final verdict.
