84Captions and a readable screen: make your stream more accessible
People watch streams on different devices and with different abilities. Some watch without sound, some struggle with small interface elements, and others listen instead of watching. A few simple checks can make your content easier for more people to understand.
Separate speech captions from game subtitles
Enable available game subtitles when dialogue matters to the action. They do not replace captions for your microphone. For speech, check a compatible solution: an OBS plugin or a Twitch captioning extension. Before connecting it, review the permissions it requests and where it sends audio.
Set the recognition language and test a recording of normal speech. Names and gaming terms may be recognized incorrectly. If captions are drawn directly into the video frame, viewers generally cannot hide them separately. Closed captions and overlaid text are different display methods.
Make space for readable text
- Place captions where they do not cover important controls, the minimap, or game dialogue.
- Choose contrasting text with a clear background and test it against moving images.
- Open the stream on a small screen. A font that looks comfortable in OBS may be too small for viewers.
Provide important information in another form
Write schedules and link purposes in your channel panels as regular text, not only images. Use descriptions or alternative text for images where the platform supports them. Important meaning should not depend on color alone. If you distinguish options in red and green, add clear labels or symbols.
Briefly narrate actions needed to understand the scene: “I am opening the sound settings” or “I moved the captions above the minimap.” This helps listeners without requiring you to describe every cursor movement.
Run two simple checks
Watch a segment without sound: can you understand the task, speech, and important messages? Then listen without looking at the screen: is there enough context? Note one specific problem and fix it before the next stream.
If a viewer reports a difficulty, ask about the situation and device. Do not promise to fix everything immediately. It is more useful to check the problem calmly and explain which setting you were able to improve.
